In Defense of Talent

People are of varying degrees in all that we do. We have those who are blessed with talent and genius, those who achieve high station due to their efforts and those who have no skill in a specific field at all.

From the outset at least, the levels are set. Mediocrity is as natural to the mediocre as talent is to the talented.

The problem therefore, is not that a portion of men are mediocre at some tasks, for this is the nature of all men in some field or another; rather, the problem is when mediocrity is celebrated as a standard.

We honour the human spirit when we honour talent, even if we do not possess it ourselves. Levelling all men in a misguided attempt at equality means the honouring of mediocrity. We end up debasing the human spirit by stifling the ambitions of those who can excel in a given field when mediocrity is celebrated.

The least we can do when recognising mediocrity, is to realise that it is mediocre and that much room for improvement lies ahead.
